P.E.I. CEO Dr. Michael Gardam

Tell us about yourself and your professional career path.

In a few months, Dr. Michael Gardam will leave Prince Edward Island for Prince Edward County in Ontario. He revealed his resignation as CEO of Health P.E.I. in July and is now on the verge of stepping down. Gardam was interim CEO at Health P.E.I. before taking over the role permanently in October 2021. Before coming to the Island, he was a well-known Toronto-based infectious disease specialist whose warnings about a certain novel coronavirus often found a home on national airwaves. Dr. Gardam completed his undergraduate degree, Master’s degree, and medical school training at McGill University and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Infectious Diseases in 1998. In 2003, he completed a second Master’s degree in Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Dr. Gardam has acted as a consultant on infection control issues such as SARS, tuberculosis, and C. difficile, at the provincial, national and international level. Within Ontario, he has helped a number of hospitals control outbreaks and develop their infection control programs.
